Tom Lawson of Paringa Charolais, Yea, spoke candidly to the packed crowd at the stud’s sixth annual production sale. He said with wife Olivia and new partner Chris Davison, Morgiana Beef, Freshwater Creek, and Lee Leachman, Leachman Cattle Company, US, he bred bulls geared for profitability.
There was no doubting this claim when the first of many Charolais, Red Angus and Stabilizer bulls strode into the ring.
They displayed power and muscle and had figures to back it up.
Bidders fired up in response and the Charolais offering of 49 bulls reached a top price of $12,000 and an impressive average of $5000. Bull price tags failed to dip below the $5000 mark for the first 16 sold which averaged $6750.
Mr Lawson said the end result exceeded all expectations.
Digging deep for the top lot was Kevin Whelan of Silverbrae Charolais, Korumburra.
He selected a Pinay son out of Rosedale Gerty female who displayed impressive growth and eye muscle area figures and was well below the breed average for birth weight.
Mr Whelan was chasing an outcross sire for his purebred commercial herd and he will be joined to 12 cows in a fortnight.
Hot on his heels in the money stakes was Brisbane Valley Pastoral Company’s Max Mullea, Brisbane Valley, Queensland, who paid to a top of $11,000 for a draft of seven bulls for an average $7000.
Mr Mullea said the bulls would be used over a herd of Brahman cows.
A second Queensland buyer and new client was Ascot Charolais, Warwick, who secured the first lot oat $5500.
First-time buyer and Yea local Marty Shaw, Murrindindi Station, put together a line of five Charolais to join to Angus cows, picked for a balance of traits and good domestic $index figures.

Gippsland interest was very strong with Gem Brae, Korumburra taking two at an average $5750, KF McRae, also of Korumburra, taking two at $7500 and $6000 and M and K Rogers, Leongatha, taking two to a best of $7000.
The Lawsons also sold Red Angus for the first time at auction to a great result, with a Te Mania Viceroy son, out of Te Mania Mittagong, making $7500 to IBR Red Angus, near Roma Queensland, buying through Elders Toowoomba, NSW for a client.
Also buying was an Elders Hay agent who took three at $2500 each.
The sale ended with a draft of impressive bulls, sold for the first time under a new partnership.
Prices kicked off strongly, with Webster Pastoral, through Elders Yea, handing over $6500 for a Morgiana Exposure son out of Lawsons Henry XIII cow.
The same buyer paid to $8000 to secure a lengthy bull by the same sire and out of Lawsons Gar Traveler and then the top price of the Stabilizer sale at 49000 for a JRI Black N Stacked son out of Henry XIII to finish their buying.
David and Ruth Read, Perry Bridge, who “came for a look” secured three bulls to $5000 on a JRI Black N Stacked and HenryXIII son at $5000, and a further two at $2500 each (one after the auction).
Mr Read said they were keen to introduce hybrid vigour into their 200-head herd and were not scared of trying something new.
Jack Robinson, Orbost, took two Stabilizers to go over black baldy cows, paying 43000 and $3500 and agent Derek Faithfull, Sharpe Fullgrabe, Orbost.
Partner Mr Davison was incredibly excited by the results, following a number of Stabilizer auctions achieving “limited success”.
He said he had received a lot of positive feedback on the composite breeding program leading into the sale and that the industry was beginning to respond to the potential gains which came with the composite sire line.

“Feedback coming from the heart of the industry tells us that what we’re doing is right in line with where the industry wants to go,” Mr Davison said.

PARINGA PURCHASE OUTSTANDING SIRE PROSPECT
View Performance data and pedigree

Tom and Olivia Lawson, Paringa Charolais, Yea, Victoria travelled to New Zealand last week, purchasing an outstanding young Charolais bull “Silverstream Colorado” from the renowned Silverstream Charolais herd in New Zealand.
Tom Lawson, keenly focused on commercial profitability, said the decision to purchase the bull was made easy; not only had this bulls dam and grand dam calved at two years of age and continued to produce top quality progeny, but the bull himself exhibited all the physical attributes they were looking for, strong breed characteristics, amazingly quiet temperament, and excellent structure. In addition to his physical features,
Silverstream Colorado’s objective data is staggering and ranks him as a true “performance” bull.

• For his age, from a big contempory group and entirely off grass, he was the heaviest bull in the 60 hd Silverstream bull sale, a great effort for one of the most powerful Charolais breeding programs in the world.

• Not only is he in the top 1% for all growth traits, but ranks in the top 5% for direct calving ease and just above breed average on birth weight.

“Silverstream Colorado” is being collected for Australia now and will be available
for spring joining 2009.

Magee Family Success story

Weaners recently sold by the Magee family at Greta broke Victorian records when 10 month old steers sired by Paringa Vanguard averaged 465kgs at Wodonga.

“These cattle had phenomenal weights for weaners and good fat cover. Buyers from all over could not believe the weights of these weaners.” Christine Magee said.

“Over the 2 day sale and 8000 head yarded, these weaners were the heaviest, even heavier than the 18 month old cattle that sold the previous day”.
